Fiji Readers is dedicated
to raising the literacy levels of Fijian children
We work in Fiji, an island nation in the South Pacific. The enthusiasm for reading in Fiji is high, but as with too many countries these days the budget for new reading books and literacy-building resources for schools is too low. Thus many children are growing up without access to new, exciting books and a lending library in their school.
But with your support we'll change the landscape.
There is far more ocean than terra firma in the nation of Fiji—the archipelago is about 75,000 square miles, of which about 10 percent is land. Two major islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, make up 87% of Fiji’s land and nearly 80% of its population. Fiji is divided into 15 provinces, 195 districts, and about 2,000 villages. The tropical maritime climate, blessed with trade winds, is warm and gentle, with occasional tropical cyclones between November and April. Fiji’s Ministry of Education reports a mix of government-funded, faith-based, and international institutions—736 primary schools and 172 secondary schools.
